July 27, 2006, PALO ALTO, CA. -- Palo Alto Mayor, Judy Kleinberg, today proclaimed July 27, 2006, as National Bicycle Greenway Day in Palo Alto, California. Palo Alto is recognized as one of the top five most bike friendly cities in the United States. The following day the vehicle was scheduled to meet San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom who, sidelined by the murder of a SF policeman, yielded his seat to popular Car-Free, bike activist Supervisor, Chris Daly.

The ride was organized by Martin Krieg in support of the National Bicycle Greenway 2006 Mayors’ Ride.

After stopping at San Francisco (SF) City Hall (see photo below), the Busycle parked on Market Street for a visit to the SF Bicycle Coalition. Next the Busycle joined 2000+ cyclists in the city’s monthly Critical Mass ride, an anarchistic bike ride that starts from SF’s Ferry Building, then courses through the business district and over the city’s famous hills. Unfortunately the Busycle did not do the hills.

The Busycle is a 100% pedal powered bus, built on the recycled frame of a Dodge truck. This mutant vehicle is powered solely on the energy of its passengers, 14 pedalers, seven on a side, facing out, each sitting in a recycled office chair. The Busycle is the first public art project to be piloted as part of the Berwick Research Institute Public Art Satellite Program. The mission of the program is to bring innovative work that engages public spaces on both social and aesthetic levels.

The maiden voyage of the Busycle was on September 25, 2005, as part of the celebration of Boston’s 375th Birthday. Next stop for the Busycle is the annual How Berkeley Can You Be parade.

The busycle left Martin's house around 2:30. After a hard but shaded drive up Waverley, we arrived at City Hall around 3:45. Mayor Judy Kleinberg and council member Peter Drekmeier were with us for the proclamation and a ride around a downtown block. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
